Metro Line 5 originates in Thane, traverses through Bhiwandi, and lands-up near Kalyan APMC, marking the arrival of the first metro line in the Kalyan and Dombivli area.
Cutting down travel time by 50% to 75 %
Introduction:
Metro Line 5, also known as the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro, is an ambitious infrastructure project that aims to connect Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan, important suburban regions of Mumbai. The 24-kilometer long metro line, consisting of 15 stations, will greatly enhance intra-city connectivity and provide a much-needed alternative to the existing modes of transportation.
Part 1
Metro line 5 Route
Starting from 1. Balkun Naka, crossing Kashili Khadi is 2. Kashili Metro Station, in between logistic fields is Station 3. Kalher Metro Station, 4. Purna Metro Station, 5. Anjur Fatah, a very important location, 6. Damankar Naka, 7. Bhiwandi.
Further taking right from Rajeev Gandhi Chowk towards Kalyan is 8. Gopal Nagar Metro Station, 9. Temgarh Metro Station,10. Rajnoli Metro Station near Bhiwandi bypass, 11. Govegaon Metro Station, 12. Kongaon Metro Station, near Kalyan City is13. Lal Chowki Metro Station, 14. Kalyan Station and the final stop is 15. Kalyan APMC near Patri Pul.
Part II
What are the benefits of Metro Line 5 and who can benefit the most?
The number one benefit is the decongestion of existing routes. Currently, traveling by road or train to Thane (W) Kapurbawdi takes a minimum of one hour to one hour 30 minutes, depending on the traffic.
A mere 15-kilometer distance from Gopal Nagar to Kapurbawdi currently takes about an hour. What if this time could be reduced by 50%? According to MMRDA, the travel time is estimated to decrease by 50 to 75%. Decongesting the road and rail network, making commuting convenient and comfortable, isn't that great news for commuters?
Another crucial aspect of Metro Line 5 is its interconnectivity to various MMR regions. Currently, the local train serves as the only convenient and feasible means of commuting within different MMR regions, such as Western, Central, and Harbor.
This dependency is expected to diminish with the well-planned interconnected metro lines within MMR geographies.
For example, Kalyan and Dombivli will be connected to Thane via Metro Line 5. Thane will be connected to Vadala via Metro Line 4. Thane will also have a connection to Metro Line 10, leading to Mira Rd. in the Western Line. Additionally, Kalyan and Dombivli will be connected to Navi Mumbai via Line #12. In short, the Western, Central, and Harbor regions will be interconnected via Line 5, Line 4, Line 10, and Metro Line number 12.
New travel routes will introduce a completely new perspective, with new landmarks, fresh approaches to locations, and new opportunities resulting in increased business activity. For example, considering the aspirational infrastructure development planned by the government, top developers like Lodha, Runwal, and Paradise Group have, for the first time, come up with office spaces and large-sized malls close to residential premises, all within the Dombivli belt."
Part III
What are the challenges?
Although it's Phase 1 under construction, metro line five faces only one question i.e. can this project be implemented on time?
It's highly possible.
Metro line 5 is divided into two phases. Phase one starting Thane to Bhiwandi and phase two starting Bhiwandi to Kalyan. While phase one work as you can see in this images is going on in full swing and about 50% work is completed. Phase two work is yet to commence.
The challenge lies between Bhiwandi to Tyingarh and approximate distance of three kilometers. As for all other stations, metro line passes from between the roads.
But starting Bhiwandi to Temghar, as you can in the below image, there already exists a flyover at the center which cannot be demolished. To figure this out, two important proposals were in placed.
Proposal 1: Demolishing hundreds of residential and commercial structures, paying way for metro line.
Proposal 2: Demolishing of minimum structures and implementing a 3 kilometer route underground.
It has been finalized that Proposal 2 which is underground route from Rajiv Gandhi Chowk to Temgarh, will be implemented resulting in cancellation of Gopal Nagar station and an increased budget of 1700 crore. The work for phase two is expected to start soon.
Considering the experience of Phase I and given the deadline of 2025 for phase two there does not seems to be any other challenges at present and the work seems to be getting completed without much delay.
