The project consists of 2 phases:

  • Phase 1 - 98.5 km of stretch connecting Navghar to Balavali

  • Phase 2 - 29.9 km long connecting Balavali to Alibaug

Utility :

  • It would open up hinterland for development and provide connectivity to Growth Centers in MMR.

  • It would facilitate diversion of traffic from urban agglomeration and thereby reduce congestion / pollution.

  • It would accelerate regional development.

  • It would provide improved connectivity of Mumbai Metropolitan Region with other cities as well as improved mobility within MMR (Source: MMRDA)

Introduction:

The Vasai-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor (MMC) is an ambitious infrastructure project in the state of Maharashtra, India. Designed to enhance connectivity and facilitate efficient transportation, the corridor aims to link Vasai, a suburb of Mumbai, with the picturesque coastal town of Alibaug. This article delves into the significance of the Vasai-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor, its key features, and the potential impact it can have on the region's development.


Salient Features

  • The Multi Modal Corridor, spanning from Navghar to Chirner near JNPT, is a unified route accommodating various modes of transportation such as buses, BRT, metro rail, and cars. It also includes essential utilities like water, sewage, and gas lines within the same Right of Way.

  • This corridor connects major roads such as NH-8, Bhiwandi Bypass, NH-3, NH-4, NH-4B, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and NH-17. It aims to provide efficient connectivity to JNPT, the proposed Navi Mumbai Airport, MTHL, and the dedicated Freight Corridor (DFCC).

  • By utilizing the MMC, traffic originating from JNPT and heading towards the aforementioned roads can bypass Navi Mumbai and Thane City, thereby alleviating congestion and reducing travel time by 50%.

  • The implementation of the proposed MMC will contribute to the development of seven growth centers in the MMR region, including Virar, Bhiwandi, Kayan, Dombivali, Panvel, Uran, and Taloja MIDC.

  • It includes the construction of 30 major bridges, 23 minor bridges, 26 vehicular underpasses, 4 pedestrian underpasses, 22 culverts, 2 ROBs, and 28 flyovers.

  • The project road falls within the tehsils of Vasai, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane, Ambernath, Panvel, Uran, and Pen in Palghar, Thane, and Raigad Districts of Maharashtra. Major settlements along the corridor include Bapane, Sarjamori, Mori, Sasu Navghar, Nagale, Paye, Paygaon, Malodi, Kharbao, Vadunavghar, Dunge, Kevani, Kopar, Kalher, Kasheli, Dive anjur, Anjur, and Bharodi.
