What Is The Proposed 'Kalyan Growth Centre' Commonly Referred To as 27 Villages?

Updated: Jun 29, 2023

The Kalyan Growth Centre refers to an urban development initiative aimed at promoting economic and infrastructural growth in the city of Kalyan & its surroundings, located in the Thane district of Maharashtra, India.

KGC Origin and need

The Kalyan Growth Centre originated with the appointment of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as the 'Special Planning Authority' for 27 villages in Kalyan and Ambarnath Talukas of Thane District by the Government of Maharashtra. Following the necessary procedures under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, the MMRDA submitted the Draft Development Plan in 2012, which was partially sanctioned by the government in 2015.

The Growth Centre was identified as one of the proposed growth centres in the Draft Regional Plan of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

MMRDA earmarked an area of approximately 1,089 hectares for development, envisioning it as a growth centre comparable to Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex.

The aim is to create employment opportunities, improve infrastructure, and enhance connectivity with the surrounding areas.

In 2015, the MMRDA granted in-principle approval for the development of the growth centre through the implementation of Town Planning Schemes (TPS).
